The Main Thing: This week, we have an update on the Ninety Days of Small Business Nurturing—actions communities can take to nurture and help small businesses survive and thrive. Can you believe there are at least 90 diverse and innovative ideas that you can do to help your local small business? It’s not required to do all ninety, but any combination of these ideas, or at least just one, is a testament to your community's support and puts your community ahead of the game. If you want to check out all the different ideas up-to-date, here they are: One through ten are here. Eleven through twenty are here. Twenty-one through thirty are here. Thirty-one through fifty are here. Focus on the Green Economy Urban Pulse: Identifying resilience solutions at the intersection of climate, health and equity by C40 As our cities grow and our planet gets warmer, a hidden health crisis is unfolding in urban areas worldwide. From scorching heat waves that lead to heat-related illnesses to increased air pollution causing respiratory problems, climate change isn't just affecting our environment – it's making people sick in ways you might not expect. Based on a groundbreaking survey of 118 cities across 52 countries, this report reveals how cities struggle to protect their residents' health from these climate threats, with only 23% having comprehensive plans to address climate and health challenges. While the situation might seem grim, there's hope as cities begin to recognize these challenges and take bold steps toward creating healthier, more resilient communities that can withstand whatever climate change throws at them. People Want to Know Sustainable Policies Can Work. So Show Them. based on the research of Matejas Mackin, Trevor Spelman, and Adam Waytz | KelloggInsight Can seeing how other countries tackle climate change inspire Americans to take action? As it turns out, the answer is a resounding yes. A fascinating new study reveals that when Americans learn about successful environmental policies from places like Paris or Colombia, they become more open to similar changes in their own backyard. Whether it's trading car lanes for bike paths or building wind farms, this research shows that sometimes we just need to see what's possible elsewhere to imagine a greener future at home – and this holds true regardless of political beliefs or where the inspiration comes from. Competitiveness, Constraints, & Coordination: A Strategy for Accelerating Energy Transition Investment in the Great Lakes by Lachlan Carey, Aaron Brickman | RMI Every state in America's Great Lakes region stands at a historic crossroads as clean energy investments reach record heights worldwide. A new analysis reveals how this traditional manufacturing heartland could become a powerhouse in the clean energy economy, with over $40 billion already invested since 2021 in everything from electric vehicles to solar power. The report dives deep into what's working, what's holding the region back, and how states from Minnesota to Pennsylvania can work together to create good jobs and build a cleaner future. While some states are leading the charge with innovative policies and workforce programs, others are playing catch-up – but all have unique strengths that could help transform the region into a global clean energy leader if they can overcome challenges like worker shortages and uneven clean electricity development. Leaders agonize over fostering teams that work well together and deliver smart solutions repeatedly—the kind of teams that, in Leigh Thompson’s words, “go through the various storms, the successes, the failures, and keep coming out alive.” Technology -- Incentives Lead to $15B Data Center Boom in Indiana by Joseph S. Pete | Government Technology -- Five years ago, Indiana enacted a law offering tax incentives for data centers to help pave the way for the Digital Crossroads data center at the site of the former State Line Generating Plant in Hammond. Economic Development -- New investments, strategies position rural Alabama for economic growth by Jerry Underwood | Alabama News Center -- Alabama’s rural communities are on the brink of significant economic expansion, fueled by strategic investments and targeted policies designed to create jobs and enhance infrastructure. City/Rural -- Traverse City’s broadband project is a cautionary tale for other communities by Gerald DeGrazia | American City and County-- The appeal of affordable, high-speed internet owned and operated by the city itself was understandable, particularly in a time when reliable internet access has become essential to full participation in the modern world. However, the challenges Traverse City now faces should serve as a cautionary tale for other communities considering a government-owned broadband network. A Webinar You Should Attend This week, instead of pointing you to a blog or article that you should read, I recommend a webinar being sponsored by the Great Lakes Lakes Economic Development Council. Overheard : “I’m increasingly inclined to think that there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish. I mean with artificial intelligence we’re summoning the demon.” —Elon Musk warned at MIT’s AeroAstro Centennial Symposium Listen, Eat, Drink, Watch, READ, View If you regularly consume Curated Morning, you will know I am an avid reader. I have been known to drink and read books at a rate of one per week for ten days. While that was fun at one time, I have found a contemplative read more to my liking. These days, I am reading about two books a month. This pace allows me to immerse myself in each book fully and appreciate the nuances of the writing. If you are seeking to polish your reading habit or create one, here is an article that will help you become a more regular reader. Reading first thing in the morning or before bed was best for me. My reading routine is deeply personal and tailored to my needs. In the morning, when my cognitive load is at its lowest, I read nonfiction. At night, when I'm seeking relaxation, I read fiction. One of my favorite reading experiences is quite unconventional. I’ve been known to sit in a bar, surrounded by the lively hum of conversation, and lose myself in a good book. It's a unique and enjoyable way to read. Listen, Eat, Drink, WATCH, Read, View A couple of weeks ago, I indulged in the enduring tradition of watching 60 Minutes, a show that has been a staple in my home for as long as I can remember. There are times when I can't watch it as the topics are too depressing or don't necessarily interest me; however, most of the time, I will endure a boring story. The show does a commendable job most weeks of balancing its mix of stories. It offers a diverse blend of positive stories and serious, thought-provoking fare, keeping the audience engaged and interested. In the video linked here, we witness the unwavering dedication of the Coast Guard as they train and develop "Surfman," sailors who endure the roughest and toughest situations to rescue and assist those who might have gotten into trouble in our oceans and waterways. Their commitment is truly inspiring and deserving of our appreciation. Listen, Eat, Drink, WATCH, Read, View I found this story unique. This is another video to watch, and you won’t want to miss this one. The artist, known as SAYPE in is amazing, and the ‘graffiti’ he creates is monumental. You will see what I mean when you watch the video. Prepare to witness art on a scale and size that has never been attempted before. Watch the video here to experience it for yourself. Listen, Eat, Drink, Watch, READ, View Are you happy? Is your City a Happy place? If you don’t know, there is an index ranking the happiest cities. Spoiler alert: Not too many cities on the list are in the USA. Apparently, we are not a happy bunch. This article describes what the happiest cities in the world have in common. These characteristics include open spaces, nature, density, and fewer vehicles than you would find in the typical American city. Let’s admit it: We are a car-centric culture and people who love the freedom of getting in our cars and going anywhere we please. The article says only one USA city is on the list, but I saw more than one. You can skip the article and look at the list here. Are any cities on the list a place you have visited or spent time in? I have spent time in four of the top 37 “gold” cities. Thanks for Reading If you liked this email, pay it forward. Share it with someone you think might benefit. Did someone share with you?
